Learners from Kuisebmond at Walvis Bay were overjoyed this afternoon, when they received their donations from the Swan Assembly trust from Sweden.
Ninety-nine learners where given bags filled with stationeries, school uniforms and cosmetics amongst others for this year.
The donation is part of the partnership program between the Flamingo group of the trust, and three schools at the coastal town. Learners from the Kuisebmond secondary school received one thousand dollars each that was used to cater for school fees and other necessities.
Each recipient’s bag was filled with items that they requested through submitting a list.
Ten learners from the Seaside, and eighty-seven from the Immanuel Ruiters primary schools receives items worth N500 each.
The learners were identified after being interviewed, to assess their situations at home.
“ The program still continues throughout their school carreer and after they leave school. Best performers also continue to receive an allowance of N$1000 every month throughout their tertiary education period. Those that fail are also assisted to pay for Namcol classes. They are also paired with families and individuals from Sweden, who adopt them and communicate with them throughout their school career.” said a teacher from the Kuisebmond Secondary School, Petrina Haipinge Seven beneficiaries have graduated from tertiary education since the program started in 2012.
The program that that is operated from the Kuiseb Secondary also caters for other community members through yearly community seminars.
The seminars include Media Democracy, HIV/AIDS prevention and management, Gender Issues, Leadership ethics, Planned Parenthood and community responsibility, teenage pregnancy and Health Nutrition, basic design and needlework and basic English communication skills amongst others.
According to Haipinge, the entire program aims at ensuring that the community of Walvis Bay members is taken care of.
